Thanks for the update. However, we will see how it goes when a real heavy downpour in the tropical sense hits KL again and my worry as usual -- the maintenance - is it reliable and for how long?

Hi All,

I work for the company that developed the flood warning and control system for the SMART Tunnel - www.greenspan.com.au (follow the technical services link). Some background for people about the June 13th event - the flood diversion system was not yet operational, or scheduled to be operational until August. However, because of that event the program of works was accelerated to be completed by the end of June, which it was (i.e. two weeks!!). I am not sure if anyone has seen the tunnel in operation since but it has diverted flood waters many times since with minimal consequences to the public. It's actually going to be featured in two more documentaries, one for the National Geographic channel - Jan 25th 2008 @ 10pm Malaysian time and one for Discovery Channel - Man Made Marvels some time in April/May/June (still in production). If anyone wants to find out more about it, particularly the flood control and diversion aspects, feel free to contact me on cgoding at greenspan.com.au (I have left the @ symbol as text so I don’t get spam).

Well as expected! I was not around when the flood at Merdeka Square took place. It must have been bad - it looks horrible in the papers. Malaysia oh malaysia.... Well somebody is laughing himself to the bank don't you think? Actually more than one person actually! Sick!

Oh...

the next Boleh Project will be a Smart Bridge- that clean river and control the flow when there is a flashflood, and of course a 8 lane double decker bridge, and toll gates too.

What a brilliant idea!

To dig a "Smart" drain that is invisible to the eyes and along built a highway tunnel so that they can charge the public.

In Bolehland, One need to be like Smart Sam to apply the TOLL concept to a Mega Project like this one. It is the collection of toll that is more important than preventing flashflood.

It is a daylight robbery. And flash flood still accurred in KL.

As normal, our UMNO and Sam Blue has in their mind is NATO, No action Talk Only, and don't plan properly, from everything. Just you wait for that flashflood to happen without any backup plan or a proper emergency strategy... I just shiver at the thought of it, even esp Singapore who is so upscale fears this kind of disaster... DROWNING BY FLOOD WATERS.

That is without the water and the CTE Tunnel under the city. This... a water irrigation tunnel cum highway? How fast can they pump out the water?? Just a comparison, a small thunderflash storm clogged the Singapore Sewerage and Irrigation system near Commonwealth MRT (as always) every time it rained very very heavily, which is once out of a blue yonder *(3-5yrs) and that is EFFICIENT SINGAPORE. This happens in KL every few weeks, with our Jangan Kerja Rajin JKR...and JPS and what nots!... Essh... I just pray this disaster don't happen.

I have to agree Azrin, it looks like a potential hazard. And the other thing I agree is the bottle neck - why and how it helps to reduce traffic - ??

Yeah..and all the 8 lanes of drivers paying the toll are bottle necked at one single exit lane towards Sg Besi toll. I was stuck for 1 hour just to exit that bleeding bottle neck. What an excellent way to cause more chaos. So, in a freak storm like the other day, everyone would have drowned!

I foresee a disaster waiting to happen! ANd yeah, that was the Brooks-Manhattan Tunnel in the movie...a very long tunnel ..and expensive too. $11 toll if I recall

It begins at Kampung Berembang lake near Klang River at Ampang and ends at Taman Desa lake near Kerayong River at Salak South.

Not so easy to get lost either in IJN or KLCC or the other end Klang or Seremban. ;)
