Pain is another meaning for more training..endurance or whatever term as deemed fit in the army. What pain? It's all about mind over body..and I agree..sometimes..some people have no feelings towards hurt, physically I mean,...but cry like a baby when the emotional hurt kicks in.

Me...I take too much ganja to feel the pain...physical or emotional..especially during times of war. (got my 10 medals to show for it)

best wishes

PS: George..do spread the word about the crime warning... it's true...and I saw the patient the other day....ouch..as if she was coming from a civil warzone!

Thanks shah & mama

Enrico, welcome. Never realised the situation in US can be quite difficult. Too much redtape, I suppose.

I agree with your post 100%. Pain from trauma or surgery yields no helpful information (unless it is reported far above normal for the situation) and should be eliminated as much as possible. Thankfully, many surgeons now make it standard procedure to inflitrate operative wounds with local anesthesia intraoperatively as an adjunct to PCAs and other systemic analgesic remedies.

Alas, here in the US, defensive medicine and fear of litigation almost always makes it harder for patients who truly need pain medication to get it or get enough of it, having to jump through too many hoops while suffering in the meantime.

Very informative entry, George.

I have to agree with the statement in the last paragraph - it's indeed sad to sometimes see consultants doing ward rounds with the junior staff members without ever addressing or talking to these patients.
