With sedative you will hardly remember the procedure. Even without sedative the procedure is not painful but maybe uncomfortable.

Hi Kelvin,

Yes these scopes are shared but they are cleaned and disinfected with chemicals that are known to kill spores, bacteria and viruses.

Hi Jen, if something persist despite being on medication then a proper check is mandatory which starts with proper history taking and examination and usually followed by an Ultrasound and OGDS. Assuming that the problem is purely due to gastritis is not right and in some cases has been proven to be very wrong.

Good to know that the OGDS went well, Ina

Han, I am not sure if I understand what you are asking. This test is to see what is wrong with your esophagus, stomach and the early part of the small intestine we call duodenum. What drugs are you referring to?

Lyana, bleeding can start from anywhere within the mouth all the way to the early part of the small intestine as you rightfully said the ligament of Trietz. However the scope is to assess the esophagus onwards.

Hi Sanul, what exactly do you need me to explain?

Thanks

Hi George, would you recommend OGDS for someone who has been having on and off gastritis/dyspepsia symptoms but now having it more regularly i.e almost everyday at night? Can by just taking Nexium solve the problem or must they still do a OGDS? Thanks.

Hi Shahidah, sorry for the delay. Hmm, when you ask me what should we do for the patients, I am assuming you are also working in a hospital setting. Well for a patient, there is nothing much that the patient needs to do except to fast for a period of at least 6 hours. This is bearing in mind that the patient had consulted the doctor and have been briefed about the procedure and thereafter a consent for the procedure taken.

During the procedure, or rather just prior to the procedure, a medication to numb the back of the throat will be sprayed to the area. Some doctors will administer sedation while many don't as this is actually a very short painless procedure but can sometimes be uncomfortable. During the procedure, the patient is advised to maintain calm and relax. This is further encouraged by telling the patient to breath deeply. The patient is also advised not to swallow their saliva and to just let it flow as there is a draw sheet placed under their face. The procedure normally last about 5 to 10 minutes and occasionally longer.

After the procedure, the patient is asked to rest especially if sedated and the results of the test would be explained to them thereafter.

As for nursing procedures, there are many to check as to when the patient arrives to the daycare, the preparations for the procedure and the after procedure which involves both patient care and instrument care.

Most often OGDS is done as a diagnostic tool to ascertain a diagnosis for the patient's complaint. However, it can also be used as a therapeutic tool when dealing with bleeding ulcers or removing polyps.

Not doing the procedure well to the very least will further prolong the problem and complications can arise such as bleeding ulcers, perforation of ulcer, a cancerous growth can be missed etc. Doctors will have to make assumptions for the patient's complaints and treat according to these assumptions which in these day and age is not recommended. Many mistakes were made by making assumptions.

Hope this info has helped. Thank you for visiting

Hi Rachel, thanks for dropping by. Well when someone has anaemia, one of the possible cause is blood loss from the gastrointestinal tract which is anywhere from the esophagus all the way down to the anus. These form of bleeding can be occult (not visible) to gross bleeding. The worry are the occult bleeds as one can bleed slowly over a period of time without causing any distress to the patient until much later. To identify such forms of blood loss, one would therefore suggest an OGDS and even a Colonoscopy to be performed, as this would cover the oesophagus, stomach, the duodenum and also the large intestine for which represents 80-90% of bleedings that occur from the intestinal tract. The balance <10% of intestinal bleeds would come from the small bowel which would require other forms of investigations i.e Double barrel endoscopy or capsule endoscopy.

I hope this information would suffice.

There are many different types of endoscopes available today. They are useful in cases such as this and it are a pretty common instrument for doctors. Flexible Endoscopes are obviously the more comfortable choice, but there are many more kinds than just flexible or rigid.
