					<description>That is really helpful, Dr George.  I am thallaesamic and it amazes that my surgeon/s did not know what it is.  Bernard confirmed that because it is not often they see patients with this condition.</description>

Actually yes it is rare for surgeons to come across this because the only time patients with such a condition see us if the spleen is swollen and removal of the spleen is required. I had one such case for a thalassaemia intermedia, last year who required splenectomy( removal of spleen). She was requiring frequent transfusion and her spleen was getting bigger.</description>
