Of rape and chastity belts

A few days ago the local daily published a statement made by a religious leader in an effort to curb the growing figures of rape and incest encouraging the female community of all ages to wear chastity belts. This was followed by a huge outcry by the womens organization against this weird and disrespectful suggestion.

Then again does chastity belt really helps. I doubt it. Furthermore, it only comes to show that the general public and especially the religious leaders fail to understand why rape occurs. Then again as long as the public votes for leaders who appear distinguished but brainless and poorly read, then these are the remarks we have to put up with.

Well, I started researching the web about chastity belts.

According to Wikipedia, a chastity belt is a locking item of clothing designed to prevent sexual intercourse and possibly masturbation. The purpose may also be to protect the wearer from rape or temptation. Devices have been created for males and females.

The western history is filled with stories that they were first used by crusading knights on their wives. There is no evidence of the existence of chastity belts until ca. 1400 which was over a century after the last Crusade.

From the 1700s through the 1930s, masturbation was widely regarded as harmful in Western medicine. Numerous mentions can be found in medical journals of the time of the use of chastity belt-like devices to prevent masturbation in children and adolescents.

Shockingly, there are recent advocates of these:

1. After the riots in Indonesia in 1998, many women found it safe and a must wear to prevent themselves being raped.

2. A lady in her 40s were caught triggering the airport alarm when checking in for her flight to Greece and this in 2004

3. Present times, this devices are used mainly as sexual consensual BDSM play and as a form of erotic sexual denial.

Problems that can arise are:
1. Allergic dermatitis
2. Pressure sores
3. Bruising
4. Poor Hygiene
5. Oedema

It just goes to show that mums and dads need to educate their sons to respect females as they would their mothers, wives, sisters and daughters.

Hi Sis and lily, true it goes back to home education but then again as a child grows they spent more time outside home and school also plays a role. Getting kids to join scouts, red crescent or girl guides as such are important activities which many parents do not encourage at present. Also sending kids for outward bound camps or adventure camps is another.

    The cartoons - thanks!
