The swelling that bleeds

Well, what you are seeing is the the left leg. The green cloth is covering his private organs. The upper margin of the picture is the torso of the patient. He has had this swelling for the past week and complain of worsening pain and bleeding from swelling. What is this?

No lah sis! The chap is a mainliner – a drug addic who shoots in his fantasy drug through his main artery – in this case the femoral artery.

True, well the commonest treatment here is to tie the femoral artery – the main blood supply to the leg. Then, remove the infected blood clot and leave a large defect to heal on its own. There is 30% chance of losing the leg – most often the collateral flow is enough to sustain the leg. Well despite this they continue to shoot themselves using the other leg’s femoral artery or will go for a larger one.

Yep it is a mycotic femoral artery aneurysm
