The problem is not the home or the school. You still find kids as young as 10 smoking in secret despite coming from any form of parenting or school. It is again the connection between the smoking and the image they appear to attain! Even the number for female smokers are high. There is just something about smoking which we haven't found out -- because we don't smoke. Those who stoped may be able to shed the answer.

I live in the U.S., and started smoking when I was about 16. I would sneak cigarettes from my mom's purse, and smoke outside when my parents were not home. At first, I did not inhale the smoke, and did it for the "coolness" and rebellion I had in me. One evening, a friend showed me how to really smoke, (even though he did not smoke), and I coughed and coughed and got a quick head rush that I liked. So, being the good friend, I told my other non-inhaling friends how to really smoke in my school restroom stall at lunch.
I write to try to explain the grip smoking has had on my life. It is a vice I have attempted to stop since my late teens. With every new year, my resolutions would include organize, prioritize, exercise, and no smoking. All were managed but the later. The longest I was able to quit was for about 2 months in 1997. I replaced smoking with brushing my teeth and drinking water. It failed when a very stressful event took place- I went straight to the store and bought a pack.
I then rationalized I would stop smoking when I became pregnant, and certainly never return to it. I do have smoking rules- no restaurants (before the ban), not in other people's vehicles, and not around children and other people who do not smoke.
I am turning 37 this month, and I am smoking. I know all the dangers, and I feel the toll it takes on my body everyday. I hate the smell, and what it does to my skin and hair and clothing. I am happy I am usually the only smoker in the workplace, and that the outside smoking stations are usually empty or with just one other smoker.
I gave up beef. I gave up pork. And I know animal testing is used on dogs via PM, and yet I do this to myself.
I recently tried a smoking cessation RX that is remarkable as I have gone from a pack a day to maybe a pack a week. I am going through a divorce, and I never got pregnant, so anxiety is a big byproduct of my decision to light up. I make the decision, knowing it is killing me.
Alcohol is legal and dangerous on many levels. Smoking is legal and dangerous. Both have no medicinal benefit that I am aware of. Marijuana is illegal. Off topic a little, but so amazing- the U.S. is about money, period.
If kids get hooked, they usually are in it for the long term. I am a product of the 80's.

Dear Sandra,

It was courageous of you to write. Well, I am happy smoking cessation Rx is helping. It will take time and I am sure you have what it takes to quit it but do it slowly. Try not to indulge in the other substances. Please keep me updated on what is happening to you. Thank you for sharing.

Heart disease and stroke are very closely related for many different reasons. There are many people that have heart disease and do not even realize it. There are some things that everyone should know so that they are not blind to the fact that they could be at risk for having a stroke and possibly dying too young.
